Review: Absolute Duo “Rebels”

ad ep 9

We got some real kick ass action going on this week! Absolute Duo, thankfully, picks up  the flag from yesterday’s finale of World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman, and brings the action, with no punches pulled. The army, with K as commander, comes in force, seemingly to take the Blaze Diabolica (that’s the headmistress, Sakuya for those keeping score at home). However, things don’t really fold out like K was expecting.

That said, I was blown away by how well the fight scenes were played out. The first real fight was when Professor Bun-Bun  leveled an entire platoon of these super soldiers with her limiter nullified. Yeah, she had a limiting device, and still could have wiped the floor with every student ever. We get our first look at a fully powered up Blaze, and holy shit, this thing looks like it can destroy worlds. Well, at the very least, rip people in two with absolute ease. Of course, after the fight, she runs off to find another group of sacrificial lambs.

The other major fight was Tor and Julie getting their ass handed to them by K. That is, until Julie powers up her Blaze to a new level, and her speed and fighting prowess go off the charts. Even K had no way to keep her down, and the only way she calmed down was for Tor to do something. This is where K’s plan goes awry, because Equipment Smith tells him to come back, he already has what they came for. So, everyone went their merry way, kind of like it was the Revolutionary War. “Oh, our battle’s done? Awesome, and the next time, let’s make sure we kill each other. Here’s the prisoner we took!”

However, the only bit of actual plot to come out of “Rebels,” was that scene, all the way through the preview for next week. Tomoe has been searching for Miyabi, but to no avail. However, after the battle is over, the viewers find that Miyabi went to Equipment Smith with the hopes of getting stronger so she can win Tor’s affection. We all know that this can’t end well. One other thing, now that we’re talking about completely overpowered characters. Who the hell was that guy with the flying blades? I freaking hope he’s around next week.

All in all, “Rebels” was a fantastic episode. This more than makes up from the chores of having to sit through the Tokyo Ghoul and The Rolling Girls finales, because all of the action we could have asked for came from the last two days. Absolute Duo surprised me again. If they can keep this fantastic action together, all the while trying to piece together a more cohesive plot, I think that we have a certified winner on our hands.
