Mexican Cemetery Comes To Life At Night

panteon-de-dolores

The Panteón de Dolores is the largest cemetery in Mexico, spanning over 590 acres and containing over 700,000 tombs, gravestones, and sculptures. When the sun sets, neon lights and animations appear on the landscape, creating such a vibrant color display that it looks like The Munsters threw a rave while on ecstasy. (And in color.)

Mexico City animation collective Llama Rada uses projectors to beam specially designed animations onto the various burial markers, creating the most upbeat and smile-inducing thing you’ll ever see atop hundreds of thousands of dead bodies.

The project is being directed by Alejandro Garcia Cabbalero and is sponsored by Ciudad Intervenida. It was commissioned along with five other art projects in various public areas around the city.

If you’re looking at the photo above and saying, “Meh…” – let me just say it doesn’t begin to do the animation justice. Check it out for yourself.
