We talk to Olivia Olson (Marceline) from Adventure Time!

0Adventure Time has easily become one of the most popular animated series in recent memory. Finn and Jake and the other characters in the Land of Ooo have resonated with fans all over the globe and this little show with a cult following is now a mainstay in pop culture.

I recently had the chance to speak with Adventure Time’s Olivia Olson, who you may know voices the vampire queen, Marceline. We spoke a lot about the show and herself and she was a delight. So continue on to read a portion of the interview I had with Olivia Olson about Adventure Time! If you’d like to hear the rest of the interview including questions about her singing, favorite shows growing up, Adventure Time: The Enchiridion and Marcy’s Super Secret Scrapbook, and more! For now, enjoy this portion of the interview!

Q: Adventure Time has blown up over the past few years, deservingly so, I think, and you’ve been part of it since pretty early on, so what’s it like being part of this show?

A: Yeah, I’ve been on since season one and I think the show has really evolved over time. It went from being a really light hearted jokey type of energy to getting pretty deep nowadays. I think it’s really cool. I think the show has grown with it’s viewers and matured quite a bit.

1f21c1029db9953a9f983a77efd1c270Q: Marcy is just an awesome character, what do you think the fans love about her?

A: It’s hard to say! There are a lot of reasons. I think what’s cool about the show is that there’s so many amazing characters, that I feel like there’s somebody for everyone. I think Marceline definitely can definitely relate to a lot of girls, especially girls who feel a little different. Maybe they have a “Princess Bubblegum” in their life, who is perfect and rules over everything. But Marceline is definitely the loner-chick.

Q: Do you have a favorite episode?

A: That is so hard! There’s so many! I think I have multiple favorites. I love any episode that Hunson Abadeer is a part of, because my real life father plays him! So, that’s always really fun, being able to act with my dad. But, I think one of my favorite episodes that I just re-watched is “Princess Day”. And that kind of goes along with the loner-chick type thing, where Marceline teams up with Lumpy Space Princess in this Thelma and Louise style to ruin the day for all of the princesses in the world, because they weren’t invited to Breakfast Day.

9-Story-Fugget-About-It-v03-2Q: There is so much imagination in Adventure Time, the limitations of the show seem fall in line with the limitations of human imagination, what do you think it is about the show that made it such a hit?

A: I think two specific reasons. I definitely think how weird it is, it’s something we really haven’t seen since the really good 90’s cartoons, and they’ve sort of been bringing that style back. But also how smart the show is! I think a lot of times people don’t give the show credit, I’ve had conversations with people who may have only seen one or two episodes of the show and they tend to say “Oh, I don’t really watch it. That show is way too weird!”. But that’s the best part! It’s really weird in such a smart way. I think they teach really good life lessons in the show that are masked by the weirdness.

01Q: Could you tell us a little about the mini-series, just in case somebody listening hasn’t heard?

A: I don’t want to give too much away, but basically, Marceline goes to Princess Bubblegum with a problem she’s been having for a very very long time. And Bubblegum, her solution of course is to go to science. So she tests out this contraption on Marceline hoping that it will fix her problem. But it ends up creating way more problems for everybody in the entire Land of Ooo. You get to learn so much about Marceline’s past. I just screened all eight episodes and I’m so happy with how it turned out! It’s awesome!

Q: Season 7 has also just started recently, why do you think audiences should be tuning in to this excellent show?

A: There will definitely be a great story line. I think it’s the first time Adventure Time has really taken one specific storyline and really elaborated on it. In the beginning of the series it was more of that random fun, light hearted humor. Then you had these episodes that would really highlight a certain character, and go extremely in depth with their back story and their emotions. It gets pretty dark. I’ve heard from the fans many times that those are their favorite episodes. So, this is a really cool opportunity where they elaborate on it a lot! If you want to know more about Marceline, who I think is the most mysterious character in the show, you have to watch “Stakes”!

And that concludes my interview with Olivia Olson from Adventure Time! It seems if you’re a fan of Marceline, there is plenty of new content that really delves into her backstory.
