English Dub Review: WorldEnd: What are you doing at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us? “Late Autumn Night’s Dream”

-Insert “Pot of Gold” joke here-

Spoilers Below

The episode begins as Willem tries to comprehend the info he just received about the young girls being “special weapons” as Nygglatho introduces Willem to everyone during their lunch saying he’s their “Second-Grade Technical Officer” as it reveals that there’s now, even more, of them than just the four young girls from episode 1. Some of their reactions are either shy or apprehensive since he’s understandably a stranger to them. The rest of the episode is spent on Willem doing his best to win the children over despite how scared they are but later while doing laundry, Chtholly explains that they don’t know how to interact with men in general. Eventually, Willem gets the idea that he should put his cooking skills into action in order for the kids to earn their trust and makes them all “flan pudding” which thankfully works out.

The next morning Chtholly gets teased privately by her two friends Ithea and Nephren about whether or not she has a crush on Willem when they make the observation about the big hat she got the last episode but Chtholly denies it given that she’s 15 years old. The next scene is when shit gets a bit real as the children play a game of dodgeball, one of the young girls’ slips and falls off a ledge with a cut on her face while the other kids look on unphased much to the shock & horror of Willem who realizes these kids have zero concern for their own safety. After patching the child up, Nygglatho in a large exposition-dump says that 500 years ago a large threat called the “17 beasts” wiped out all life on the surface and the solution to fighting these beasts are magical swords called “Carillons”. Nygglatho further explains that the children are in fact species of fairies called “Leprechauns” who can use these weapons with absolute ease and don’t fear death.

The next morning Willem finds out that Ithea & Chtholly left for several days but came back on a mission with Chtholly heavily exhausted. As he’s about to take the two home, a large dragon creature approaches Willem telling him to return to Carillon swords to the vault. After returning home, Chtholly wakes up and explains to Willem that he shouldn’t express concern for her because due the short life-cycle of her species and says she has “5 days left” which happens to be when her next mission is a location called “Island 15” and plans to sacrifice herself to stop the threat. Chtholly makes a final request to be kissed by Willem but he turns her down saying not to sell herself short and gives her a tame back massage. The episode ends in cliffhanger fashion when Willem looks at the sword and has flashbacks of his past indicating that he had a history of that particular sword and a previous wielder who used it at some point.

Our Take

The song’s intro “Dearest Drop” is quite catchy and the imagery that accompanies it is quite compelling & bloody since most anime intros often visually changed & foreshadow events or insert visual symbolism of what to expect from the characters & story. As for the meat of this story so far, it’s compelling and weird that the children were Leprechauns the whole time too and it’s possibly the first time Japan has dipped their toes into Irish mythology in combination with the other fantasy creatures.
