English Dub Review: Star Blazers “Cosmic Graveyard”

Should this one have stayed dead?

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The Yamato ship gets trapped into a time rift, but as luck would have it, a Gamilan ship is trapped there as well. I say “luck” because the captain of the ship seems reasonable and offers to help Yamato in exchange for a cease-fire. One of the Gamilans, Melda Ditz, boards the ship as an insurance policy for the Yamato while they are towed out of the rift.A conflict ensues on the tow ship but is resolved, however, it kinda doesn’t matter because as soon as everyone is out of the rift a Gamilan trap emerges lead by General Goer who chases after the Yamato. Okita pulls a fast one on Goer when he retreats long enough for Goer and his fleet to be sucked into the rift, but now Ditz is a prisoner.

Our Take

Star Blazers continues to showcase a knack for having a lot of things going on at the same time, almost making for beautiful chaos. This week we had mutinies, betrayal fights with a hostage and a captain that loves to fuck around with the enemy much to our delight. Having Ditz on the ship adds another arc to a few others that we have in store for us in this series and it will be interesting to see how she becomes a factor in later episodes.

The overall premise of the series is starting to bore me. Like, I feel like I’ve been on this ship with this crew for 10 years now and with no end in sight. Moreover, I almost have no vested interest in the Yamato’s crew with the exception of Okita. The producers haven’t done a good job in making me care if Earth survives or not and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
