English Dub Review: Seven Mortal Sins “This is Indeed the Work of Demons…”

Yes, like the title says “This CLIP SHOW is Indeed the Work of Demons.”

Well, we got an even crazier episode this week as instead of facing a Mortal Sin, Lucifer faced her must cruelest opponent yet. The audience’s dwindling attention span. Curiously enough this week’s episode is a clip show of the whole season so far. All 4 episodes of it. It definitely feels like a means to lengthen the production period the team behind Seven Mortal Sins has to produce each episode and its subsequent dub.

Sadly, as clip shows go, this was a pretty poorly put together one mostly due to the fact that there is so little story to recap the narrator is just left to be silent as we watch the same sex and torture scenes repeat. The dullest aspect of the clip show is right after the opening credits where it takes the longest time to recap episodes 2, 3 and 4. If I am recalling correctly weren’t those episodes the simplest and straightforward? Episode 2, Leviathan a.k.a. Envy uses some water tentacles to grope Maria. Episode 3, Lust gropes Maria, Lucifer is violated by tentacles and then Lust is beaten. Episode 4, Greed traps the girls, makes Maria drink her breast milk, she tortures Lucifer for a bit then Lucifer beats her.

Those descriptions sadly do cover everything you need to mainly know about those episodes. They are part of the villain of the week episodic format, all that really needs to be set up is who is Lucifer going to fight that week. Episode 1, on the other hand, is left for the 3:10 space before the opening theme to recap its story and setup which I find almost maddening. That was the one episode that I wanted some more clarification on. However, I did get one crucial plot point clarified. In the first episode when Lucifer is falling from heaven to hell she has her chance meeting with Maria and she did something concerning her Blood with Maria but I couldn’t really tell what she did or what significance it held. Thankfully we have episode 4.5 to tell us Lucifer was giving Maria her angel’s blood before she got corrupted in hell.

That answers that lingering question I had over the series leaving mainly one more. How does Angel’s blood make it easy for Maria to see where the other Mortal Sins are? A power which is activated by Lucifer licking her nipples by the way. The more I think of questioning this show, to ask it to let me into its world and immerse myself, I just realize the show is clearly not trying to be anything more than fetishistic fan service.

And honestly, that’s completely alright. In the grand scheme of fan service anime, I admire that this show is putting a better visual twist on how it portrays the sins and their methods to bring humans down to damnation. It’s just coupled along with girls in very revealing clothing. Overall this is a very poor clip show but it allowed me time to reflect on the series and where I stand with it so it had some use. But if you are already enjoying the series then just wait for episode 5.
