English Dub Review: Saga of Tanya the Evil “Resistance”

Resist!

Saga of Tanya The Evil  “Resistance” follows “Path to Victory” with the ongoing Imperial military dominance. Tanya Degurechaff (Monica Rial) leads her battalion of mages into battle.

Although there’s an elated feeling, Tanya’s excitement isn’t just because of the Empire’s military prowess. Rather, it’s outsmarting Being X. “I’m sure that once there’s peace again the mundane nature of everyday life restores your sanity…with this attack everything will be over, and I will have proven Being X wrong.”

However, Tanya’s unit encounters a resistance movement mounted by the Republic. Col. Anson Sioux, also bestowed with Being X’s power, leads the charge. His mission is to kill Tanya, dubbed the Devil of the Rhine.

I enjoy seeing the two Being X disciples faceoff against one another. While Tanya is definitely a likable character in spite of her at times cold personality, it remains more entertaining to watch a well-matched battle such as this Empire-Republic skirmish. There’s never really a concern that Tanya and her battalion will lose.

One scene features a vivid chase through the clouds in 2.5d. Sioux and Tanya fight, and it gets pretty personal. “I killed you,” Tanya wonders aloud before Sioux explains that he’s alive because of Being X. Though Tanya’s battalion easily handles the Republic troops, the Empire’s soldiers don’t come by an easy victory. Ultimately they do take the Republic capital.

“Resistance” features a slower pace, but that’s not to say it’s boring. Rather, the narrative is more methodical. Most of Tanya’s battalion travels to the beach for a brief vacation replete with beer and meat. However, it’s a fairly short vacation. Tanya comes to a realization about the Republic’s strategy. But an armistice stands to foil Tanya’s plan to finally destroy the Republic.

With Saga of Tanya the Evil season one coming to a close, “Resistance” sees a resistance on several levels. There’s the Republic counterattack, as well as Tanya resisting orders from the Imperial high command. This episode feels more dialogue and drama driven than battle heavy, a pleasant touch.
