English Dub Review: Love Tyrant “Farewell x We’re Rivals, Obviously!!”

The Love Story of a guy and is yandere girlfriend is about to reach its tipping point.

Over the last few episodes, we have been watching the backgrounds of Akane and Yuzu form slowly and surely as keywords and plot points are littered about. Swords. Shields. Akane’s blank stare. The backgrounds of their families are now on full display and it’s honestly less complex then the build-up would lead you to believe. Following from the last episode, Aino, Yuzu and Guri have busted into Akane’s house to save her from her controlling and cold mother and that’s really all that happens.

It’s a simple setup with many implications towards the advancing relationships of Aino and Akane, Akane and Yuzu and finally Aino, Guri, and Akane. I really appreciated that all around and I all the growth felt very natural for their character arcs. Aino and Akane were getting more lovey dovey. Yuzu was getting her love returned by Akane. Even Guri was showing more an understanding of love as she sees straight through Akane defiance towards love Aino and her seemingly growing jealousy for Akane. Unlike the last episode where Guri’s LOL randomness starts to grate the viewer, this shows an actual growth in her persona. Sure, she is still the same immature yaoi loving ditz but finally, we’re seeing growth in how she can communicate with others. Not just with blind obliviousness but with an actual understanding of the people she interacts with.

The other key point of this episode is the backstory of Akane and Yuzu’s family. Now, this is a long story like even the show iterates. Akane’s family is a family of assassins who deal with the selling and trafficking of swords. Yuzu’s family is a family of protector’s who deal with protecting important people. That sounds very complex but literally, I summarized it exactly in 2 sentences just like the show does. The show more goes into detail on how Akane and Yuzu’s mom fell in love with their father and due to being heartbroken that is why Akane’s mom grew so cold and wanted to punish Akane for loving Aino.

It leaves me with an odd feeling like there could have been more added but it felt like a good amount to keep the focus on the main lovers’ quartet. Deliberating over that makes me feel the quartet should be the main focus. It’s a strong simple episode and a nice cherry on top of all the story build up over the series. It’s not over yet but this episode definitely closes a few mysteries on our girls and just leaves us with the most important question. Which girl is Aino gonna end up with?
