English Dub Review: Kenka Bancho Otome -Girl Beats Boys “The Punk Idol Arrives!”

Would that be Billy Idol?

Kenka Bancho Otome -Girl Beats Boys continues with “The Punk Idol Arrives!” A new character, a musician by the name of Yuta Mirako is introduced. In an interview-style opening, he explains that he was slated to make his debut as an artist at the school he attended.

When arriving at all boys’ Shishiku Academy, a swarm of giggling girls arrives at the school gates. But Mirako falls for Hinako, a girl currently enrolled at Shishiku and masquerading as her twin brother Hikaru.

Throughout “The Idol Punk Arrives!” Konparu and Totomaru flank Hinako. But Mirako’s arrival poses a major problem: Yuta believes that Hinako is actually a girl. He fails to believe her disguise as Hikaru.

I enjoy the addition of Yuta. He promises a neat side character. Sure, his actions through the episode are pretty creepy. But Mirako poses a threat to Hinako’s identity.

There’s a little better cohesion when compared to “Show ’em What You’re Made of! The Great Study Session.” Yet it’s still rather sporadic in its narrative progression. There’s a lot hinted at but sparse plot advancement.

I really appreciate the characters. It’s these elements which make the series enjoyable. What I’m most curious about and keen to discover is how Yuta and Hinako develop a relationship. The friendship between Hinako, Totomaru, and Konparu works well, so a bond between Mirako and Hinako could function, especially post-fight.
