English Dub Review: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders “Devil”

You say “God” and I say “Say 10”

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

Wishing to keep The young girl who tagged along with them safe until she’s due to meet with her father, Team Joestar proceeds to check into a hotel, with Polnareff given his own room. Upon entering, Polnareff quickly figures out that one of Dio’s assassins is hiding, and Introduces himself as “Soul Sacrifice” who’s Stand power “Ebony Devil” curses anyone he holds a grudge against. Of course, Polnareff not knowing this is easily baited by Soul into laying a hit with his Silver Chariot Stand which not only injures the crazy sicko but activates his Stand and quickly disappears out the window.

The episode doesn’t waste time as what happens 11 mins and 30 seconds in will easily terrify the shit out of anyone that’s scared of killer doll movies. While scenes are carefully intercut between Polnareff contacting Avdol about what just happened and then Avdol explaining to Joseph the infamy of Soul Sacrifice’s deadly reputation regarding his “Ebony Devil” stand, Polnareff gets easily ambushed & tied under a bed as Ebony Devil finally makes its presence known and it’s effectively terrifying.

Out of dumb luck, Polnareff’s Silver Chariot is able to cleverly free himself and afterward, Polnareff demands info regarding his sister’s killer, but when Soul denies knowing anything about him, Polnareff’s Stand completely destroy’s what’s left of Ebony Devil, which also kills Soul Sacrifice in the process. The episode ends with one hell of a cliffhanger as Joseph decides to use his Stand powers on a Random television in an attempt to be one step ahead of Dio, and gets a cryptic message before the TV explodes that Kakyoin might be a traitor.

Our Take.

While episode 8 was heavily-focused on Polnareff, I did enjoy this one a lot. Soul Sacrifice works as a legitimate threat that leaves a lasting impression. From the unorthodox method of crawling out of a mini-fridge to his stand appearing harmless before going in for the kill, to even a scene where he randomly kills a hotel employee which further cements that he doesn’t fuck around. The action & horror elements felt properly balanced with a dark tone while managing to make me laugh in scenes that I wouldn’t expect to get a chuckle from.

With Joseph’s prophetic vision regarding Kakyoin, Will he & Avdol be able to warn everyone else within Team Joestar about it in time? Let’s find out in Episode 9.
