English Dub Review: Gamers! “Chiaki Hoshinomori and Account Hack”

Secrets are revealed and cute antics ensue as Chiaki gets her own episode.

Throughout Gamers we, the viewers, have been dragged around a lot by its fallback storytelling plot device, the misunderstanding. You can gauge whether the amount it has used it is acceptable or past your tolerance level all on your own, but my take on it is that Gamers is best at its misunderstandings when the characters are actively responding to it. What I mean is, the characters react and act upon that misunderstanding in ways to unravel it.

I have iterated before that many of the past misunderstandings can be undone by just one question and answer from each character but given how the show wants to make these characters the most awkward beings around that simply ain’t going to happen. So, the misunderstandings have now been undone through obtuse yet character displaying means. Last episode it was through the Game of Life and now we get the next step in Chiaki’s relationship with Keita.

OVERVIEW

Following Chiaki’s discovering that Keita is her long-held and dear online friend, Chiaki now goes through her own bout of awkward emotional wrestling. Much like what Karen Tendou did in her episode. But especially with the inclusion of Karen, Chiaki put herself into the odd self-made love triangle between Keita, Chiaki, and Karen. Unlike Karen who wrestled with feelings of unrequited love from Keita, Chiaki has to face that times 1000 as Keita is already dating Karen. So with newfound unrequited love burning in her brain, Chiaki must find a balance between Keita, her gaming and hiding her secret with the help of Konoha.

OUR TAKE

The culmination of all that tension from Keita and Chiaki acting so hostile towards one another when ironically online they are dear friends feels satisfying here. It’s nowhere near its completion as Chiaki is keeping secrets and such but with the help of Konoha the misunderstanding forms naturally. This allows Chiaki like Karen in her episode prior to really put the love-struck awkwardness on display as Keita is oblivious to it all. It’s a really cute and fun episode and if out of the trio of girls you love Chiaki Hoshinomori that this episode will be amazing for yah.
