English Dub Review: Dragonball Super “Vegeta Becomes a Student?! Win Over Whis!”

We have a winner.

Spoilers Below

The episode begins with a random & comical scene between Kabito-Shin & Grand Kai before cutting to another scene with Goku lazily sleeping while his tractor is still actively moving. Krillin flies in waking up Goku and is surprised that Goku isn’t training with King Kai this time. But this is mainly due to Chi-Chi blowing all that money from episode one in preparation for the child that Gohan & Videl will soon be having. Krillin reminisces about the simpler times back when they both trained under Master Roshi’s tutelage during their early years of Dragonball and the power level difference between them as children. Curious to see how large their power-gap is, Krillin hilariously tells Goku to sock him one in the face with all his might. Goku tries to change Krillin’s mind. But ends up punching Krillin anyway which sends Krillin flying into a boulder.

Shortly afterward, Goku heads home, while Krillin’s wife Android 18 plays nurse and tends to his wounds. Meanwhile, Vegeta is seen in the random wasteland standing determined. With the ambition to surpass Goku without the aid of others. We then cut to Whis & Bulma having lunch together. Whis continues to enjoy all the food Earth has to offer so far and Bulma then pleads with Whis to protect Earth from Beerus in case he ever gets as petty as he was last time and Vegeta arrives out of happenstance.

Vegeta asks Whis to see Beerus, but Whis turns down saying that Beerus is currently resting up. Vegeta wants to Surpass Goku and he then finds out that Whis was the one who trained Beerus and says yes to training Vegeta on the condition that Vegeta has to impress him with a culinary delight. In a comical montage, Vegeta first goes to many restaurants in Japan, but Whis is unimpressed due to already partaking in them but Vegeta starts to cook himself, but he’s useless at cracking eggs. Vegeta finally impresses Whis with a normal cup of instant ramen noodles. Before Vegeta heads off with Whis to Beerus’ planet, Bulma hands him new black body armor. They arrive on Beerus’ planet shortly afterward and prepare to train.

Our Take

The cooking montage with Vegeta was funny to see a brutal warrior/prince having to deal with the everyday inconveniences of cooking while wearing a pink apron but it humanizes him as a relatable character. At the end of “Battle of the Gods”, but before “Resurrection F” film, there was a gap of unanswered questions that were never explained to the audience on why Goku & Vegeta were already training with Whis, But now the question is how did Goku impress Whis enough to partake in the same training? Hopefully, we’ll get that answer in the upcoming episodes.
