English Dub Review: A Centaur’s Life “Antarcticans Are Like Walking Rumors. | But In the End, The Antarcticans’ History and Roots Are a Mystery, Too.”

Snakes in UFOs.

Spoilers Below:

“Antarcticans Are Like Walking Rumors” and  “But In the End, The Antarcticans’ History and Roots Are a Mystery, Too” are two parts of a single story, rather than different segments. Rather than focusing on the main trio, the spotlight is on the transfer student from Antarctica, Quetzalcoatl. She resembles a snake and is trying her best to fit into the class. Quetzalcoatl gets one of two reactions: curiosity and fear. She is biologically different from the other kids, and they want to know everything they can about her. In one scene, the class crowds around her, asking her everything from her history to her romantic life. Having never before seen an Antarctican in person, she is treated like a curiosity.

However, this is not always the case. Himeno is frightened of her because Antarticans have been shown as a common enemy in horror movies for years, and Quetzalcoatl reminds Himeno of her childhood fears. While Quetzalcoatl reminds Himeno that replicating those movies are biologically impossible to her, she is still initially seen as a monster. Her motivation for coming to the mainland is so she can clear up misconceptions about her people, so she is disappointed that her people have been seen this way for so long. The government supports her, and she is making a genuine effort to connect with her new classmates, there are always those who are fearful.

It’s shown in the series that the mainland doesn’t have that much knowledge on the Antarcticans, and so they treat them with extreme caution. A disaster is quickly attributed to Antarctican meddling, which implies that the general public is more fearful of them. Quetzalcoatl, who is there to try to clear up misconceptions, quickly becomes afraid that the public will treat her badly for the recent news. She even attempts to hide her face, in fear that she might be mistreated on the street. The main trio doesn’t do so, but it’s unclear whether that’s the general consensus. Quetzalcoatl is also given government protection, so nobody is allowed to attack her, but that wouldn’t stop how people actually feel. Although she is a nice person, she carries the entire weight of her people in a country prejudiced against her.

Despite these issues, the main trio, Himeno included, tries to become friends with her. At the core, she seems to be a genuinely nice girl. She is very hardworking, and even if the cultures don’t overlap, she is trying her best to understand mainland culture. Hopefully, in future episodes, she can make more friends, and have a better experience.
