Comics Review: Steven Universe #5

“The Almost Unspoken Life of Lion”

The story begins with Steven & Connie returning from a random adventure while riding with Lion and the two decide to celebrate but the rest of the comic’s focus is mostly on Lion’s random & comical encounters with the people associated with Steven during Steven & Connie’s absence. These encounters include: Bumping into Greg’s Van, getting a free frozen treat from Sadie at The Big Donut, messing with Pearls swords in her training room, Mistaking Amethyst for a stray cat and chasing after a blue lizard with Lapis & Peridot in the way but it ends with Lion Roaring at a portal that randomly appears and the issue just abruptly stops without an indication if it ended or not as the comic was 21 pages long.

Our Take.

While the story is short and Garnet was nowhere in the story despite being on the cover, A good chunk is spent on Lion chasing after a random blue lizard-like what most curious & predatory animals do. There’s very little dialogue in some of the pages and a small sense of wonder when Lion travels between worlds & dimensions including a page where Lion shows up in an ancient Rose Quartz Temple for a short period of time but It felt like I was watching those classic silent cartoons along the lines of something Chuck Jones would do or classic Tom & Jerry as it plays to the whole “Show don’t Tell” rule very well. I’m quite confused on how the comic abruptly stopped on the last page. Most of the Steven Universe comics I’ve covered from Kaboom Entertainment have often been one-shot stories that could pass for a filler episode so I don’t know if this was done on purpose.
