Comics Review: Adventure Time Comics #14

It’s a party.

Spoilers Below:

First off is “Finn vs Finn” by Justin Jordan and Matt Di Meo. Finn is bored to the point of even being tired of fighting. This is drastic, so Jake takes him to Wally Wando, the warp wizard. Wally sees that Finn has a particularly bad case of boredom, so he sends the pair off to a new parallel space. There, they find clones of themselves from another universe. Finn gets excited to fight his evil twin, and a large battle ensues. Over the course of the fight, Finn realizes that he’s not sure if his twin is actually evil. They decide that they’re both good, and part ways. Finn thanks, Jake, but then wonder what he’ll do next time he’s bored. Jake suggests wondering whether he’s the original Finn or not, casting Finn into a state of existential dread.

Next is “P-B-M-O” by Crystal Skillman and Fred Van Lente. It’s Bubblegum’s birthday, but she’s not interested in celebrating it. BMO runs in, saying that Finn and Jake have been taken captive by Flame Princess. Bubblegum drops everything to go help them. BMO tries to lead the way, but BMO and Bubblegum keep clashing on who is leading the rescue party. In the Flame Kingdom, Bubblegum realizes that there was no danger; they were all throwing a surprise party for her. She thanks them all, and they all start dancing.

The third is “For the Love of Ooo” by E Jackson. LSP is holding a dating show- and half the participants aren’t interested in joining in. She does this with the purpose of getting back together with Brad, who keeps trying to tell her that he’s not interested in her. Brad wants to get together with Melissa, but LSP refuses to listen to him. Eventually, all the contestants leave, Brad and Melissa included, and LSP says that Ooo isn’t ready for love.

Last is “Where the Slime Live” by Steve Seeley, where Finn faces a giant slime monster with many heads.

Overview:

Overall, a fun collection. It ranges from the humorous to the bizarre. Where the Slime Live, in particular, is a double spread featuring a very unnerving monster. PBMO is a fun story about Bubblegum’s friends trying to make her birthday special, and For the Love of Ooo seems very reminiscent of shows like the Bachelorette. The stories have a lot of variety– perhaps too much variety, but they are all pleasant reads.
