Comics Review: Adventure Time Comics #12

From funny to mysterious.

Spoilers Below:

First up is “Future’s Futures” by Diigii Daguna. Charlie gets fed up in the middle of her tarot card reading and storms off. Jake happens to be nearby and asks her what’s the matter. She explains that all her predictions come true and that all of the outcomes are negative. Even when she tries to predict something happy, she ends up seeing the bad, and it’s disheartening. She admits that she’s jealous how Jake can have fun all the time. He points out that even if bad things happen, it’s up to her whether to focus on the good or bad. The advice cheers her up, and Jake offers to go catapulting with her.

Second is “Sundae Morning” by Nicole Andelfinger and Irene Florese. Finn and Jake are bored and decide to pass the time by eating ice cream. They end up challenging each other to an eating contest and stuff their faces until they feel sick. Defeated, they call a truce before BMO walks in with more ice cream.

Last is “Playing with Giants” by Joey McCormick. Finn wakes up in this mysterious place and nearly gets stepped on by a giant. He remembers losing track of Jake and is approached by a spider in the middle of his thoughts. The spider claims to know where Jake is, and tells Finn a story of how the giants used them to catch flies but started killing them when there were too many of them. They approach a giant with the intent of beating it up, but the giant says how it’s not their leader. The giant smashes the spider and explains how spiders infested the place a few days ago. Confused, Finn takes off his hat, and the giant is dazzled by Finn’s hair and agrees to take him to their leader. At a card table filled with giants, Jake reveals himself; having been named the giant king after the real king lost his title after a round of cards. The king calls Rummy, and regains his title back.

Overview:

So far, Future’s Futures is to be the most touching story. While we all can’t see the future, the good and the bad always happens in life, and the moral of the story is about perspective. By focusing only on the bad things, you end up feeling terrible. Even if nothing is purely good all the time, focusing on happy moments can make you a happier person. It’s good life advice, and a nice reminder to give yourself when you feel down.

Sundae Morning was fun and cute, but Playing with Giants tried to go for something more serious. The art was great, and Finn exploring the world of the giants was fun, but the ending seemed a little weak for the setup. The contrast between the spider and the giant was interesting because each told the same event through largely different perspectives. From the spider, it helped the giants by eating all the flies, and the giants repaid them by killing them all. From the giant, the spiders are an infestation and a nuisance. It’s an interesting thing that’s briefly touched upon- but the spider is coded as evil for being a liar, so that didn’t really go anywhere. It started out strong but could have had a stronger ending, even if the ending was funny.

Overall, an okay issue. Nothing particularly outstanding, but nothing bad at all.
