Comics Review: Adventure Time #74

A drop of color.

Overview:

Jake has an idea, but before he can discuss it, Magic Man pops in to steal it.

Our Take:

This is a rare one-shot instead of the usual four-parter and before getting into the plot, I will say that it’s very well done artistically. Magic Man sucks the color out of the world, which in turn removes all color from the comic. Even as they explore different parts of Ooo, all the pages are devoid of color, thanks to the Magic Man’s influence. As a result, it could double as a coloring book, if the consumer wanted to try their hand.

Most comics are there to tell a story, but few are involved with direct audience engagement, simply due to the limitations of the medium. However, this makes an attempt to do so. Most of the places and characters that we see in this issue have never appeared in the show or in the rest of the comics, so we don’t have any canonical colors attached to them. If the audience so chooses, they can color the characters in whatever scheme they want. Considering the large portion of the plot revolves around creative freedom, it is granting the audience the choice to be just as creative. It’s allowing the consumer to make and tell the kind of story that they want (within the boundaries of the comic), and have fun. A nice touch.

The plot is fairly straightforward, with Finn and Jake exploring Ooo in search of Jake’s lost creativity. As they go through, nothing seems quite right, but they manage to trick the Magic Man into giving all of Ooo’s color back. In the end, Jake realizes that his idea was a boring one, and continues on. Another story where the journey is worth more than the reward.

It’s not too deep, but it’s a whole lot of fun. I highly suggest picking it up if you want to have a fun time coloring or doodling.
