Comics Review: Adventure Time #69

The race concludes.

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The conclusion of the great race is an odd one, largely because the tone of this issue is so incredibly different than the previous ones. Instead of an adventure that aims more towards broad thrills and excitement, this issue is more comedic and contained. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s almost of a mood whiplash when taking the rest of the story into consideration. The previous four issues focused more on adventure-time exploration with a lot of references thrown in, but this is more comedic.

As it turns out, everything was the plan of Hunson Abadeer, who wants to throw Marceline a deathday party. She’s extremely reluctant, because dads are lame and embarrassing, and she doesn’t want her friends thrown into whatever he has planned. It turns out that he genuinely wants to throw her a party because he thinks daughters like presents and surprises. However, being from the Nightosphere, all the presents he gives are dangerous, including a pony that tries to eat souls. The party struggles to find a way to fend off the pony without it consuming them, and it eventually explodes into a river of candy. Stanley is revealed to be the Ice King, who just wanted to have fun. Marceline realizes that her dad is trying, and everyone ends up partying.

Our Take

It’s a fun story, but it feels so off compared to the rest of the arc. This issue would honestly function as a standalone, or maybe a two-parter, but the ending is so divorced from the rest of the arc. It’s self-contained, and even though it’s the end, it doesn’t feel like the rightful conclusion to an adventure. Fun, but not enough.
