Spoilers Below:

The race segment is unfortunately still stale.

It’s a quest-type adventure, so each time the teams retrieve portions of the statue, they enter a new area, which requires them to find new ways to get around the solution. The temples and ancient grounds are really clever, ranging from Indiana Jones-type dungeons to a dark hall of mirrors. There’s a lot that’s thrown at the heroes, and it’s potentially interesting to see how they get through! Unfortunately, the Finn-Jake-Stanley team spend most of the time not being very dynamic, and the girls make it through a little too easily. The previous volumes had more of a challenge, but this volume seemed to focus on the wrong things. It doesn’t feel as engaging and fun as a wacky hot-air balloon race across Ooo could have been, which is a shame.

As expected, Stanley Nougat isn’t who he says he is. Stanley was suspicious from the start, and the powers that he revealed at the start of the comic proved that he definitely was more than he claimed. However, Stanley being a sealed form of Hunson Abadeer wasn’t something anticipated, at all. The entire race ended up being an elaborate scheme for Hunson to manifest himself– which is a potentially interesting plotline. Unfortunately, the story and points leading up to that weren’t as exciting. The individual portions seemed to drag, and the reveal at the end of the comic was by far the thing that stood out the most. Over the course of the series, Hunson has routinely proven to be hard to defeat. Whether he really has properly manifested, or if this is just an incomplete version of him remains yet to be seen, but if he’s in Ooo, he could be deadly. It will be an interesting challenge!

The plotline is set to wrap up next month, and hopefully, a wacky fight with Hunson might uplift this arc a little.
