Comics Review: Adventure Time #60

Definitely not what you were expecting.

Spoilers Below

In a continuation of the previous two issues, Finn is trapped in the past (our present) on the moon, and is forced to guard the mysterious sword. He has been isolated for decades – centuries if his narration is to be believed – and his interactions with astronauts on a lunar mission might bring Finn some much-needed help to find a way out of his paradox. In the meantime, Princess Bubblegum and Jake risk putting themselves in danger to send aid to Finn. Finally, a new face appears from the far future, who could be the key to solving the whole problem.

Our Take

Surprisingly, the storyline is pretty grim. The enemies this time are not the run of the mill strange but comedic inhabitants of Ooo, but are ancient, monstrous beings with multiple arms and oozing flesh. The Finn we know is excitable and energetic, but even that has a limit. The comic continuously drops hints that years of isolation have worn down Finn, and the idea of spending more time alone and waiting for help is terrifying for him. Astronauts venturing into the unknown, chase sequences, mysterious creatures that pose a danger to civilization; while Adventure Time has its more unsettling moments, this arc reads like a space horror story. The typical comedy is present, and Finn’s isolation has not completely degraded his personality, so it still feels like Adventure Time but with an interesting twist.

Overall, this segment gives more insight into Finn’s situation and ends on a cliffhanger that leaves readers eager for the next issue. It is worth picking up if you want to read some fun, mild horror.
