Comic review: Bravest Warriors #23

Spoilers Below

We rejoin the gang as Beth, Plum, Wallace, and Catbug race through the Cave of Pointy Dangerous Things to find Chris. Danny is still being taken over by space leeches, which is allowing ChrisBot to brainwash him a bit. Things definitely do not look good for our heroes.

Talking about looking good, we peek back at the kidnapped Chris, who is still dressed in a Slave Leia costume. The worms (I’m pretty sure they are supposed to be like Jabba the Hut) are using another slave to translate their orders to Chris. All of the slaves have their movements controlled by red metal rings around their necks.

Finally, Chris has enough of the humiliation and uses his mental powers to lift everyone in the air. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last long and the worms are completely unimpressed.

Back to the other Warriors, ChrisBot convinces Danny that he is the real Chris and that Wallace is a bad guy that kidnapped their friends. When the Warriors finally look at Danny, they see all of the space leeches covering his face. Before they can do anything, ChrisBot hits Wallace over the head with a rock and mysteriously knocks the girls out. The Bot then uses Wallace’s shield to escape with Danny down the tunnel.

Meanwhile, Chris is being zapped with an electrical prod by the little boy slave from the previous issue. The worms are still issuing stupid orders, like forcing Chris to bring them blocks of butter. However, every time Chris says something, the boy slave tells the worms he is saying something completely different. Of course, this makes the worms zap Chris even more.

As the Warriors begin to regain consciousness, they wonder where ChrisBot took Danny. Catbug takes Beth’s cell phone as he flies off to search for the second missing friend.

The secondary story in this issue is titled “Escape from Junk Rat Island, Part One of Two.” Chris decided that it would be a good idea for the Warriors to vacation on a planet called Junk Rat Island. In his defense, the brochure for the island basically said everything they were NOT going to do…but it was all one big lie. For example, the brochure said they were definitely not going to race to the death. Of course, their junk rat jailers make them race to the death.

When the Warriors get to the racetrack, they find their “vehicles.” They get to choose from a gazelle, a severed hand, a bathtub on wheels, and a weird walking hovercraft-type thing. Each of them chooses a vehicle and the race begins.

It is a pretty standard Deathmatch race with murderous obstacles and escape attempts blocked by giant rats. But the Warriors do find some allies in their vehicles. It turns out that all of the vehicles are not on sentient, but they are also captives as well. They agree to help the Warriors escape if the friends help them first.

I found both of these stories to be pretty interesting. The both have the standard pacing of Bravest Warriors stories, meaning that sometimes the pacing runs a little slow but the end result is worth the wait. There weren’t as many one-liners or jokes in either of these stories so, hopefully, they will return in the next issue. Overall, this was a bit too much filler and not enough meat in the story. But filler Warriors is still better than no Warriors at all.
