Academy Awards 2020 Animated Films Race Potential Nominees Begin Jockeying For Position

The Academy Awards is mere months away, and this might be one of the tighter races for independent animation we’ve seen in quite some time as it pertains to potential nominations. Various films are starting to show up and represent at different animation festivals across the country.

I LOST MY BODY, written and directed by Jérémy Clapin, recently won the Animation is Film festival Grand Prize. It is the tale of a severed hand in a Parisian laboratory, that escapes its unhappy fate and sets out to reconnect with its body. Along with streaming later this month on Netflix, the film is expected to contend for best animated film at the Academy Awards.

Another film expected to contend at the Academy Awards, filmmaker Elizabeth Hogenson’s revealing animation Dani (pictured) shares a personal tale about her former roommate’s phone call with her mother, in which she reveals a life threatening illness. This topical film won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Animated Short at Mammoth Lakes Film Festival 2019 and the Best Animated Short award at Palm Springs International ShortFest.

Could we be seeing the lead horses in the race for an Academy Award? It depends on how much Disney paid off this year. More as it develops…
