Our Take
This won’t be the biggest voice acting switcheroo news of the evening, but it’s a big one given how much press was wasted last year when it was announced. Otis Volcanowitz, the newest detective at the Grimsburg police department that was previously voiced by Martin Short is now being voiced by David Cross. That said, the Otis Volcanowitz role was so scant for last season I’ll be curious to see how big of an impact this change has on the show moving forward. I actually happen to be a big David Cross fan and this show marks another new role for the legendary voice actor after also getting in on the President Curtis cast earlier this season for a recurring role as Dr. Finch.
As for the swap, so far so good in another spoof premise that actually works as the strongest episode that Grimsburg has had in two seasons. In fact, looking back on this, if this show just wanted to go the spoof route they really could have just done multple seasons just spooking Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul and both the set up of the show and execution probably would been far more aligned and led to better episodes overall instead of the weekly flavor of the week bits we get now.
A whole crime caper with dramatic twists and turns, compelling dialogue moments, and the slimmer cast actually helps Grimsburg focus this week and kind of makes you wonder what could have been because this is so far the must watch episode of the season thus far.
