English Dub Review: Sasaki and Peeps “Mother and Child”
Overview
Sasaki’s boss invites him for a talk while his neighbor gets drawn into a strange new world of her own.
Our Take
Picking up long after the previous season, Sasaki and Peeps returns with a double-length Season 2 premiere that takes a surprisingly dark turn by exploring the troubled upbringing of Sasaki’s teenage next-door neighbor, Otonari. Her mother’s cruelty and neglect reveal just how awful her home life has been, leaving her without the care, security, and affection every child deserves. It’s particularly frustrating to see how the adults around her have failed to recognize the severity of her situation, making her circumstances all the more heartbreaking. This heavier subject matter adds a disturbing emotional dimension to the series that I wasn’t expecting.
Meanwhile, Sasaki continues juggling his business dealings in the fantasy world alongside Peeps, while the story expands its supernatural elements and brings familiar faces back into the mix. The combination of fantasy, political intrigue, interdimensional commerce, and magical-girl action gives the series plenty of variety, though the sheer number of elements occasionally makes the narrative feel overcrowded. Despite that, the episode maintains the show’s distinctive charm, and the colorful ending theme provides a pleasant contrast to its otherwise grim atmosphere.
Overall, this premiere delivers an intriguing but unsettling start to the second season, earning a 6/10. Otonari’s circumstances are difficult to watch, and her situation serves as a sobering reminder of the lasting impact that a deeply troubled upbringing can have. While the darker tone gives the story greater emotional weight, the abundance of competing plotlines leaves me questioning whether the series can give each one enough room to develop. Nevertheless, Sasaki and Peeps remains an entertaining guilty pleasure, and I’m interested to see whether its ambitious blend of genres can come together without the story becoming too convoluted.
