English Dub Review: Reincarnated as a Sword “Jean Du Vix Knows His Stuff”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Jean’s expertise proves invaluable as the dungeon’s dangers and dark history reveal themselves.
Our Take:
Fran and Teacher got the hard part out of the way, thanks to Jean’s necromancy. Now, they have to conquer the next step in their latest adventure: conquering the dungeon full of the undead. Sounds simple, right? Unsurprisingly, no. This dungeon is filled with monsters immune to Teacher’s abilities, thanks to their Identity Jammer and Fake Identity skills. Luckily for him and Fran, Jean continues to prove himself a worthy ally on the battlefield through his necromancy and ghostly minions, including Stephan, who’s possessing the monstrous version of the nameless boy held captive. It’s also revealed that the organization that held the nameless boy hostage is transforming captive children into monsters, so the question remains as to whether this group will be on Fran and Teacher’s hit list this season.
At first, I was a tad curious about how much of a role Jean will get in this arc and even how tolerable he’ll become. But after watching the first two episodes, I started to see him as another decent addition to the series’ cast regarding his macabre personality. It also further highlights the anime’s suitably unique take on the traditional necromancer stereotype, who’s usually portrayed as a powerful enemy in other isekai fantasy anime. So far, Jean seems like the only one I wouldn’t mind hanging out with compared to the others. This, along with decent animation and a thrilling sentry battle sequence, made for a fun exploration of its familiar dungeon-expedition premise.
