English Dub Review: Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship! “Mimi the Girl”

Overview

After landing on the trade colony Tarmein Prime, Hiro rescues an orphan named Mimi.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, Reborn as a Space Mercenary follows Hiro as he rescues Mimi from a group of thugs, refusing to ignore her plight despite the locals treating such incidents as commonplace. After learning about her troubled circumstances, Hiro offers her a place aboard the Kirishna and hires her as a mercenary. With Elma helping Mimi settle in, the two begin developing a closer connection, leading to an unexpectedly mature and intimate moment that adds another dimension to Hiro’s character.

The rest of the proceedings also delivers some exciting space combat as Hiro, Elma, and their fellow mercenaries embark on a mission to eliminate a group of space pirates. Hiro demonstrates his impressive combat skills, while Elma’s struggles with piloting a difficult ship provide some comedic moments. Between the action sequences and the developing crew dynamics, the episode continues expanding the series’ futuristic setting while introducing new possibilities for the adventures ahead.

Overall, this episode was a decent continuation that balances entertaining space battles with surprisingly mature character interactions. While Mimi and Hiro’s relationship develops rather quickly, their scenes offer a different approach to romance than the usual awkward exchanges found in many isekai series. The animation could be stronger, and certain moments would benefit from more breathing room, but the action, humor, and growing crew dynamics make this another enjoyable outing. Also, be sure to stick around after the credits for a random comedic scene that provides one last laugh before the episode wraps up.
