English Dub Review: Overgeared “The First Step of a Blacksmith”
Overview
Grid’s luck turns when he becomes heir to a legendary blacksmith, and his stats get reset to zero…
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, Overgeared continues Grid’s rough start after his new Legendary class leaves him at level “Minus-3” with heavily reduced stats. Stuck in Bairan Village, he’s forced to work for the blacksmith Khan by chopping wood, mining, and doing manual labor to repay his debts. Despite his frustration and stubborn attitude, Grid’s natural blacksmithing talent begins to shine, leading to some surprisingly impressive results. The humor is also much stronger this time around, adding plenty of fun to his misfortune.
As a continuation, this episode is a noticeable improvement over the pilot. The story still relies heavily on game terminology and stat screens, but Grid’s crafting-focused progression gives it more personality. His hard work also begins to make him more dependable, while J.C.STAFF continues to deliver solid animation and a fitting soundtrack. Grid may not be the most likable protagonist yet, but his reckless personality and comedic misfortune make him entertaining to watch.
Overall, this was a much more enjoyable episode that gives the show a stronger sense of direction. The combination of humor, character progression, and blacksmithing makes Grid’s journey surprisingly entertaining, even if the series still feels somewhat generic at times. It’s definitely a step up from the first episode and leaves enough potential to make continuing the series worthwhile.
