English Dub Review: A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special “Beginning”

Overview

While Romantica, Pram, and Azest advance in the championship, a man in a crow mask attacks the castle.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, the newest installment introduces another major complication as political tensions rise and a mysterious organization threatens the kingdom’s stability. While Romantica, Azest, and Pram enjoy some satisfying moments in the championship tournament, the proceedings take an unexpected turn when troublemakers crash the festivities.

The rest of the proceedings also raised some questions about the group’s decision-making, particularly when it comes to protecting innocent bystanders. While their intentions are understandable, some of their choices feel questionable given their considerable abilities. On the other hand, Desir and Zod deliver some particularly entertaining moments, and I’m curious to learn more about the mysterious organization and its motives. Hopefully, the next episode gives the rest of the crew an opportunity to demonstrate what they’re capable of.

Overall, I’m glad the overarching story is finally picking up steam, but I’m still having trouble getting fully invested in this season. Some developments feel disjointed, and the lack of meaningful reminders from the previous season makes certain plot points difficult to follow. The animation also seems noticeably weaker this time around, which doesn’t help matters. There’s potential in the new conflict, but the storytelling and presentation still need some work to keep things engaging.
