Legendary Anime Voice Actor Mike McFarland Passes Away at 56 After Battle with Brain Cancer
The English dubbing industry and the global anime fandom are mourning a massive loss today. Mike McFarland, the versatile voice actor, director, and writer behind some of the most iconic English-dubbed characters in anime history, has died at age 56 following a battle with brain cancer.
His passing was confirmed by his close friend and fellow voice actor Brina Palencia. McFarland passed away surrounded by friends and family at a care facility in Dallas.
A Courageous Battle
McFarland’s health struggles first came to light publicly in January 2025 after he was forced to step back from an appearance at Central Florida Comic Con. Voice actor Colleen Clinkenbeard later confirmed he was battling a brain tumor, leading to surgery shortly after. Later that year, the diagnosis was revealed to be glioblastoma, an aggressive and malignant form of brain cancer.
Throughout his illness, Palencia organized a GoFundMe to assist with medical expenses, while members of the voice-acting community frequently visited his Dallas facility to keep his spirits high—singing songs, sharing stories, and offering support during his final months. Palencia noted that McFarland requested those looking to honor his memory consider donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the SPCA.

Beginning his career in the late 1990s, McFarland became one of the foundational figures of FUNimation’s early dubbing efforts. He brought humor, charm, and grit to a sprawling roster of legendary anime characters.
