English Dub Review: The 100 Girlfriends Who Really Really Really Really Really Love You “Kusuri-Senpai’s Grandmother”

While visiting Kusuri’s home, Rentaro feels the sparks fly with her grandmother! Is this really going to fly?

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, Kusuri’s grandmother Yaku Yakuzen finally joins the Rentaro Family, and she’s every bit as entertaining as you’d expect. Despite being an octogenarian (89-year-old), Yaku permanently retains the appearance of a short young girl thanks to the immortality drug Kusuri invented, creating a hilarious contrast with her mature personality. I especially enjoyed how she didn’t immediately fall for Rentaro as most of the other girls have, forcing him to put in some actual effort to win her over. His hyper-masculine act was more embarrassing than impressive, but his sincerity eventually won her affection.

The second half was easily a comedic highlight, as Yaku attempts to memorize the personalities of the entire Rentaro Family and predictably gets almost everything wrong. Seeing the girls transformed into bizarre combinations of each other’s traits led to some great gags, from giant Shizuka and masochistic Chiyo to busty Karane and an Americanized Hakari. The reactions were just as funny, especially Karane’s outrage and Hahari questioning the morality of anything while being completely unselfaware. More importantly, I love seeing the girlfriends interact with one another, making the Rentaro Family feel increasingly like an actual family.

Overall, Yaku turned out to be a much more enjoyable addition than I expected, balancing Kusuri’s eccentricity with a much more mature and comforting personality. While some of the personality-mixup jokes dragged on a little longer than necessary, the second half more than made up for it. I also liked that Yaku’s addition to the family didn’t happen instantly and that Rentaro actually had to work for her affection this time around. She’s now been added to the updated ED, so hopefully we’ll see her appear in the OP soon as well.
