English Dub Review: Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia “Wisdom”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Tolui meets a shocking fate, and Sitara receives an unexpected item that shakes her to the core of her being.

Our Take:
Tolui became a daring leader in his invasion of the Jin Dynasty, but his fearlessness came with the ultimate price.  Volunteering to be the sacrifice, Tolui rescues Ogedei from the jaws of death stemming from rahj al-gar poisoning, only for him to die in his brother’s place.  Because the show is based on Mongolian history, it’s hard to decide whether to feel bad for Tolui or be glad the Mongols lost another Khan sibling.  Either way, it again showcases Tolui’s honor in risking his life to save his loved ones, even if his death could trigger a power shift within the Empire.  Additionally, Tolui’s death may have brought her one step closer to getting her revenge.  However, her other goal she’s hoping to accomplish is to retrieve the Elements from her enemies’ hands, which, to be honest, I have completely forgotten about.
Fortunately, we don’t have to wait too long for her to get it, as Boraqchin gives Sitara the book as a reward for saving Ogedei.  “Wisdom” showcases Sitara completing her crucial task for Fatima as part of her long-term strategy.  But she still has a long way to go to truly be free, especially when her friendship with Toregene has become rocky lately.  More importantly, Sitara is now starting to understand her own wisdom through her exploration outside Tus.  I would also point out that the episode continues to showcase Science Saru’s effortful presentation, notably in the vision where Tolui rescues Ogedei from the spirit world.  While it falls a tad short of the emotion it’s going for in this sequence, it’s still another solid example of Science Saru’s creativity and stylized artistry.
