English Dub Review: Sparks of Tomorrow “Elopement”

Overview

On the day of Inako’s engagement ceremony, Kihachi urges her to chase her dreams and helps her escape. Guided by Stuart’s letter, they head for Shiga.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, Sparks of Tomorrow finally pushes the story forward as Kihachi encourages Inako to stand up for herself rather than abandon her dream. Their decision to leave Kyoto leads them toward Shiga, where they hope to uncover more about the mysterious Catalog. Along the way, the episode highlights how well Kihachi and Inako complement each other, with his skepticism balancing her optimism while their growing bond gets some much-needed attention.

The rest of the proceedings also deliver plenty of tension, particularly during an extended chase that gives KyoAni another opportunity to show off its animation. The action is energetic and beautifully staged, while Kengo once again steals the spotlight with his incredible physical feats and increasingly complicated emotions. Meanwhile, lingering questions surrounding Seiroku and the Catalog add an intriguing layer of mystery, even if some of the plot developments feel a little too convenient. The biggest issue is that the episode’s emotional moments could have landed harder with more time spent developing the characters beforehand.

Overall, this is easily one of the season’s strongest episodes and a welcome return to meaningful story progression. The combination of character development, mystery, comedy, and spectacular action makes the journey feel more exciting, while Kihachi and Inako’s dynamic continues to be one of the show’s biggest strengths. There are still some unanswered questions and rushed elements, but for the first time in a while, it genuinely feels like the larger story is beginning to take shape.
