English Dub Review: My Hero Academia “I am a hero too”

Overview:

Eri is now a high school student with a dream of becoming a musician. Next week will be her first street performance, but when she turns to Deku, now a teacher at U.A., about it…

Our Take:

Now that I’ve stopped crying, I’m ready to review this episode. It’s probably generous to call it an “episode” when it clocks in at six minutes. You might also be thinking, “How did it manage to make you cry in such a short runtime?” Well, that’s because seeing Eri as a teenager sing the song “Hero too,” which is a song that always makes me cry for some reason, got me good. But for such a short episode, I have quite a bit to say.

For one, after seeing this, I would love a Boruto-type show for this that takes place in the future and follows the next generation. Seeing everyone from Class 1-A tune in or show up to watch Eri’s performance was a great full-circle moment. Eri was a character that we got attached to when Deku rescued her, but I like seeing that she’s close with Kota. If you don’t remember, Deku also rescued Kota, so I would like to see more with these two students and their classmates.

This takes place around the same time as the end of the series, I’m pretty sure. Deku has already risen to the top 5 in the latest hero rankings. While that’s cool, I still feel a little let down with the promise we were given way back in season one. Deku kept saying that this was the story of how he became the number one hero in the world. In a sense, I guess he did, but I wanted to see my boy top the charts, dang it!

The worst thing about this episode was the length. I want more of this; give me a whole new season with this as the premise. Who says that a shonen show can’t transition into some slice of life stuff? We could follow Eri getting taught by Deku, and to still get our action fix, we could follow Deku doing his hero work after he’s done teaching. I feel like My Hero Academia didn’t follow through on the premise we were promised. Still a great show, but this mini-episode left me feeling a little sad with what we could have had.
