English Dub Review: From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman “The Old Country Bumpkin Gets a Marriage Proposal”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Shueste, the sister of Beryl’s former student Warren, relentlessly pursues Beryl, but for a good reason. Seeing this upsets Allucia, Warren explains both his and Shueste’s motives and encourages Allucia to make her own move. Beryl’s actions at the banquet leave Shueste even more smitten. Having finished their assignment, Beryl and Allucia head home, but face an unforeseen encounter along the way.
Our Take:
It’s no surprise that Beryl has yet another task to accomplish as a master swordsman, let alone one involving a crucial wedding. But do you know what’s also not surprising? Allucia’s jealousy. The previous episode showed Beryl being assigned to Warren’s younger sister, Shueste, who will protect him from other women trying to approach him. However, it also left Allucia a bit worked up again when she saw Beryl with another woman. It’s obvious that Allucia has had a crush on Beryl, despite him being older than her, but with her jealousy being the only trait she’s known for, this running gag does end up wearing itself thin. Plus, I think Shueste is also younger than Beryl, so this age logic still baffles me.
Regardless, the assignment ended up being shorter than expected, but that doesn’t mean there’s not enough room for some development. In this case, we see Warren help Allucia try to win over Beryl with her elegant dress, further emphasizing her crush on Beryl. We also see that Beryl may have been feeling the same way for her, as he continues to struggle with love while understanding the importance of marrying someone on one’s own terms. The latter part emphasizes Warren’s purpose of arranging a marriage between Shueste and Beryl to protect the family bloodline. However, the most crucial element that could serve as the basis for the remaining episodes is that Beryl and Allucia are now fighting the mysterious Verdapis Mercenary Company hired to stop the wedding. With one of his own comrades severely injured, Beryl undoubtedly has no choice but to put a stop to it. While a bit underwhelming compared to Beryl’s family reunion, the episode’s ending ensured that this crucial assignment is just getting started.
