English Dub Review: Chainsmoker Cat “I Was Born to Parents Too, Nya”
Overview:
Yani takes a cleaning job at a shady underground facility. Meanwhile, her landlord welcomes a new houseguest, quickly followed by an unexpected mishap.
Our Take(Spoilers):
Has there ever been a character harder to describe to people than the landlord? He’s nice to all of his tenants and goes out of his way to help them, even the ones who aren’t beastfolk, or I’d be worried about something. I would have to wonder if he’s so nice to them because he wants something from them, if you know what I mean. He clearly has a fetish for them; if that wasn’t obvious, then it would be after this episode. He got “stuck” in his beasfolk blow-up doll during an earthquake and got locked out of his apartment, but luckily Tatsuno was there to help.
Penpen Neko is a homeless beastfolk who had her tent get flooded away in a recent storm. She’s been sleeping under a cardboard box on the apartment property, and the landlord offered to help. Suddenly, a gust of wind blew her dress over her head, and the landlord saw everything. He got the biggest animated boner I’ve ever seen, and something tells me she might find different living arrangements. That’s what I mean: he has good intentions, but it’s hard to figure him out.
Another thing that surprised me was seeing that Yani and Imoko have a loving mother. She seems to want to smoke occasionally, and Yani doesn’t help with that habit. Imoko might have a point when she says that their mother enables Yani’s bad behavior because she doesn’t do anything to stop it.
It was still interesting to see that they have at least one parent who seems to have their shit together. For some reason, it looks like Imoko lives somewhere else, but I could be wrong about that. Some of these episodes are like a blur in my life, with some of the weird shit that happens, so I could be remembering wrong. I wonder what Yani and Imoko’s dad is up to. There has to be some reason that Yani is the way that she is, and not to be cliché, but my guess is daddy issues.
I still have no idea what this show is supposed to be about. Maybe we’re supposed to take it as a cautionary tale of what not to do. We see a nicotine addict and an alcoholic, among other things. But it’s wrapped up in cute anime cat girls, so it’s anyone’s guess at this point.
