Review: X-Men 97 “Rise of Apocalypse Part 2”

Overview

An alliance between the X-Men and En Sabah Nur begins to crumble when Rama-Tut seeks supreme power.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous 3 episodes, X-Men ’97 continues its time-travel storyline by following Xavier, Magneto, Nightcrawler, Beast, Rogue, and later Bishop in Ancient Egypt as they attempt to alter the future by guiding the young En Sabah Nur before he becomes Apocalypse. However, the arrival of Rama-Tut and the growing ideological divide between Xavier and Magneto complicate an already impossible mission, resulting in an episode that explores destiny, free will, and the consequences of trying to rewrite history.

Rather than relying solely on explosive action, the episode shines through its character interactions and philosophical conflict. Xavier, Magneto, and En Sabah Nur each represent vastly different visions of how power should be used, creating some of the strongest dialogue of the season. The action sequences are equally impressive, featuring fluid animation, cinematic scale, and several standout moments that showcase the series’ anime-inspired presentation. More importantly, the episode delivers one of the most compelling portrayals of Apocalypse to date, adding meaningful depth and tragedy to a character who has often been reduced to a straightforward powerhouse in previous renditions.

Overall, this is an outstanding episode that balances spectacular action with emotionally driven storytelling and thoughtful themes, making it one of the season’s highlights without depending on constant twists or surprises. The writing gives its central characters room to grow while continuing to build anticipation for the episodes ahead, and longtime fans will especially appreciate how it expands Apocalypse’s origins and motivations. Be sure to stay through the credits, as there’s a post-credits scene that teases what’s coming next and is well worth watching.
