English Dub Review: The Ghost in the Shell “SUPER SPARTAN II + JUNK JUNGLE I”
Overview
Major Kusanagi and her team begin operating as the Shell Squad after being scouted by Aramaki. At some point, the cyberbrain of the Foreign Minister’s interpreter was infected by a virus. Aramaki senses that Col. Malles, who is living in exile in the country, is trying to interfere with a secret meeting. He orders Kusanagi to back-trace the hack and find the culprit.
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, Major Kusanagi and her newly formed Shell Squad “Section 9” (basically a black-ops police force that takes down cyber criminals) officially begin working under Aramaki. Before the main investigation begins, the episode revisits the corrupt orphanage storyline that quietly sets up a larger mystery that appears connected to the series’ broader themes. The focus then shifts to a diplomatic crisis when the Foreign Minister’s interpreter falls victim to a cyberbrain virus, forcing Section 9 to race against time to trace the hacker while navigating the political fallout surrounding the exiled Colonel Malles.
Despite the increasingly serious plot, the episode never loses its sense of personality. Kusanagi and the team share several lighthearted moments that make their chemistry feel natural, while Science SARU’s adaptation of the manga’s infamous “Summer Vacation” boat scene adds another layer to Motoko’s character by emphasizing her humanity rather than relying solely on fanservice. The stylish animation, nostalgic ’90s atmosphere, and thrilling garbage truck chase all capture the spirit of the original manga while giving the action a fresh, energetic flair.
Overall, this was another excellent episode that confidently balances mystery, action, and character development while continuing to honor Masamune Shirow’s original vision. Although the dense world-building and rapid pacing may be challenging for newcomers, the strong animation, memorable cast dynamics, and intriguing central mystery make it an easy recommendation for both longtime fans and curious newcomers alike.
