English Dub Review: Chainsmoker Cat “My Juniors”
Overview:
Yani wants to continue her carefree life, but she receives a job offer as financial pressure builds. Will she commit to this opportunity or her freedom?
Our Take(Spoilers):
There’s a whole lot to get into with this episode, so we’d best get started. First things first, we finally have a cast list. Our main character, Yani, is voiced by Rebecca Wang, who’s been pretty busy the last few years. You probably heard her as Jinwoo’s sister, Jinah, in Solo Leveling or as Kuina Sazanami in Tougen Anki. One thing I’m enjoying about anime in the last year or so is how much new talent we’ve been getting. One person on the cast list I’d like to talk about is Lauren Landa. She’s not a newcomer, but I had to do a double-take when I saw the cast list. The character she plays, Hame, didn’t even sound like her. More on the character of Hame later, but now that I know, I’m looking forward to this character more.
Another character we’re introduced to is Yaku, who is a neighbor of Yani. Lured by the smell of smoke, Yani asks Yaku if she can try one of her hand-rolled cigarettes. As you might have guessed, it wasn’t tobacco she was smoking, and Yani’s friend is quite the addict. Yani walks in on Yaku shooting up something in her veins, and as you can guess, it doesn’t go well for Yani.
Back to Lauren Landa’s character, Hame. She’s another of Yani’s neighbors and a gamer and YouTuber. She has some anger issues when things don’t go her way, but as far as I can tell, she’s the first friend of Yani’s who doesn’t smoke. Instead, something much worse happens to her. Beastfolk don’t have last names as we do, so once they’re a certain age, they can go and get one. Hame adds a symbol that I think is supposed to be a star into her name register, and the worker can’t tell what it is, and she thinks it’s a butthole. So, Hame’s full name is now Hame Easygoing Anal Angel Neko; what an awful name to have. She might not have been a smoker before, but I bet she’ll be one soon.
Last week, I talked about how disgusting this show was. My opinion hasn’t changed a week later, and if I had to guess, it will become more gross as we go on. So far it hasn’t affected my enjoyment of the comedy, but we’ll have to see if that holds.
