The Dark Knight Returns to Noir: “Batman: Caped Crusader” Season 2 Sets July Premiere on Prime Video
Prime Video has officially unmasked the release date and dropped the first preview images for the highly anticipated second season of “Batman: Caped Crusader.” All 10 episodes of the hard-boiled, animated noir series are scheduled to stream globally on Friday, July 31, 2026.
The announcement brings a massive wave of relief to fans who have been waiting for a return to this gritty, retro universe since the show’s critically acclaimed, “Certified Fresh” debut season in 2024.
Expanding Gotham’s Rogues and Allies
Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, DC Studios, Bad Robot Productions, and 6th & Idaho, the series acts as a ground-up reimagining of the Batman mythology. It follows billionaire Bruce Wayne in his brutal early years as a flawed, deeply isolated vigilante waging a relentless one-man war on crime.
According to Prime Video, Season 2 will dive significantly deeper into the corrupt underbelly of Gotham, putting Batman’s detective skills to the ultimate test. The studio’s freshly released first-look images have already confirmed the arrival of several major, fan-favorite DC characters who will alter the course of the narrative:
-
Edward Nygma: Gotham’s brilliant, riddle-obsessed tactician is stepping into the spotlight, bringing a more grounded, cerebral threat to the city’s detective landscape.
-
Carrie Kelley: Historically known as the iconic female Robin from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, her introduction suggests Bruce might finally have to open his isolated world to a new generation of allies.
-
Roxy Rocket: The thrill-seeking, rocket-riding thief is set to bring her signature high-flying chaos to the show’s grounded visual style.
-
The Joker: Following a brief tease at the end of the freshman season, co-showrunner James Tucker has previously hinted that this universe will feature a vastly different, deeply unsettling take on the Clown Prince of Crime inspired by his earliest Golden Age comic book roots.
An Elite Creative Circle
The series continues to benefit from an incredibly high-caliber creative brain trust. It is spearheaded by executive producers Bruce Timm (the visionary co-creator of the legendary Batman: The Animated Series), cinematic mastermind J.J. Abrams, and The Batman director Matt Reeves.
The trio is flanked by a powerhouse writing and production team that includes acclaimed crime comic author Ed Brubaker, James Tucker, Daniel Pipski, Rachel Rusch Rich, and Sam Register.
While the official voice cast list for the new season is still being finalized, scouting reports indicate that Hamish Linklater will return to anchor the series with his dual vocal performance as the cold, calculating Batman and his detached Bruce Wayne persona. Christina Ricci is also slated to return as the elusive Catwoman (Selina Kyle).
Mark your calendars for July 31, 2026. All 10 episodes will drop simultaneously on Prime Video across more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. In the meantime, the entire first season is currently available for streaming to help you get back into the peak-noir mindset.
