‘Finally, a Show About Men!’: Australian Animated Satire Taking on Modern Masculinity Bows on YouTube
In an era where conversations surrounding gender, identity, and the expectations placed on “the modern man” are more prominent than ever, a new Australian animated series is stepping up to the plate to tackle the subject with a healthy dose of wit, humor, and sharp satire.
As first reported exclusively by Variety, the short-form animated sketch comedy series Finally, a Show About Men! has officially made its debut, premiering on the wildly popular Grouse House YouTube channel, curated by the acclaimed Australian comedy group Aunty Donna.
Subverting the Playbook of Australian Masculinity
Produced by Gold Coast-based Sad Man Studio, the series is the brainchild of real-life husbands and creative partners Samuel Leighton-Dore (who serves as writer, director, and co-producer) and Bradley Tennant (co-producer).
Despite its tongue-in-cheek, seemingly defensive title, Finally, a Show About Men! is anything but a standard defense of old-school bravado. Instead, the animated sketch show dives headfirst into the hyper-fixations, absurdities, and underlying vulnerabilities of traditional Australian masculinity—frequently filtering these themes through the lens of sport, backyard culture, and peer pressure.
Leighton-Dore is uniquely equipped to explore these dynamics. A prominent screenwriter and author, he has previously written extensively on the subject, notably in his 2016 illustrated book How To Be a Big Strong Man, which questioned the rigid, often toxic emotional expectations placed on young boys. With this new animated vehicle, Leighton-Dore and Tennant are bringing those same nuanced, empathetic, yet deeply funny observations to life.
Backed by Homegrown Support and Leading Comedy Curators
The road to the screen for Finally, a Show About Men! was paved with significant support from Screen Queensland, which backed the project earlier this year as part of its highly competitive Online Production Grants. The initiative was designed to give digital-first Queensland creators the resources needed to scale their projects for international audiences.
By partnering with Aunty Donna’s Grouse House, the series lands on an exceptionally fertile launchpad. Grouse House has built a reputation as Australia’s premier digital streaming platform for boundary-pushing, off-the-wall sketch comedy, boasting a massive global subscriber base that loves irreverent, fast-paced humor.
A Massive Slate on the Horizon for Sad Man Studio
The premiere of Finally, a Show About Men! caps off an extraordinarily busy period for Sad Man Studio, which is rapidly establishing itself as one of Australia’s most exciting boutique animation houses.
The studio’s distinct creative voice has clearly struck a chord with industry executives. Just weeks prior to the YouTube launch, Penguin Random House Australia announced it had acquired the rights to Leighton-Dore’s upcoming young adult graphic novel, Willy, which tackles the whirlwind of adolescence and small-town family dysfunction in Far North Queensland.
For fans who quickly devour the initial batch of sketches on YouTube, there is even better news on the horizon. A 10-episode second season of Finally, a Show About Men! has already been greenlit and is scheduled to head into active production by the end of 2026.
By blending sharp cultural critique with the limitless boundaries of animation, Leighton-Dore and Tennant have crafted a series that proves examining masculinity doesn’t have to be clinical—it can be downright hilarious.
