English Dub Review: Farming Life in Another World “Martial Arts Competition”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
What better way to mark a celebration than with a martial arts competition?
Our Take:
It’s not spring without a festival to help celebrate the occasion. However, the festival stands out from the others, as it includes a martial arts tournament to crown the best fighter in the village. It bears repeating that the series is known for its tranquil, slice-of-life tone, with no heavy conflicts threatening Hiraku’s peaceful life. It’s enough to stand out from the isekai crowd, but outside its light-hearted humor, it can get a bit boring at times. However, this episode gives the show its due by highlighting the characters competing in an action-packed tournament. Don’t worry, though, this competition is all in good fun rather than for the fate of the Great Tree Village.
Not only was “Martial Arts Competition” the most “exciting” part of the season, if not the entire series, but it also further highlights Studio Zero-G’s presentation. Sure, the studio deserves credit for conveying the source material’s character designs and tranquil settings. But the tournament is where the studio really shows off its efforts. Rather than overusing freeze-frames as shortcuts, the episode actually showcased the action scenes, highlighting the characters’ abilities and fighting styles, particularly the battle between Lu and Tia. Of course, it still contains the slice-of-life humor we usually see in previous episodes, but the animation team deserves credit for adapting the tournament segment with plenty of flair. For an anime that doesn’t have a lot of fighting involved, this episode really packs a punch in its presentation.
