Review: Universal Basic Guys “That Dog In You”
Overview
Mark trains Hank to become a professional eater. Tammy joins Darren’s video game squad
Our Take
One thing us Jersey folks love is fucking hot dogs and I kinda had a feeling a hot dog contest was coming down the pike one of these days given that it’s one of the best known events in the NYC-metro area and Hank being a hot dog aficionado makes this one a no-brainer. Of course given this is a show from sports nerds you’re gonna get the Rocky pastiche montage thrown in there and voila you got yourself a hot dog episode. Does it do enough to REALLY separate itself from other animated series that have done food contests? Some of the depth of crazy that the guys went to to really wonder about the seedy world of competitive food eating is pretty funny, but other than that not really.
Furthermore, Tammy joining Darren’s game squad was almost note for note identical to Randy joining Stan’s game of World of Warcraft in the Emmy-winning episode “Make Love, Not Warcraft” just maybe a tad cuter but still almost an identical premise and execution in what we got there. Another crowded field to go along with the other crowded field of food-eating contests but at least this week’s food-eating contest tried to thrown in a curve ball or two which I can’t say the same for the B-plot.
Overall, there were some entertaining bits here and there but really both premises suffered from lack of originality.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
