Review: Adventure Time – Fionna and Cake “The Worm and his Orchard”
Heart is where the Home is.
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Fionna, Cake, and Huntress end up in a strange new realm and each new wisdom on their respective journeys.
OUR TAKE
We’re down to our last two Fionna and Cake episodes (hopefully for just this season as a third season has not been confirmed quite yet) and Huntress finally finds the means to find the Heart of the Forest. And because Fionna is in a bit of an ego death depression spiral, she follows in after her, while Cake follows HER to keep her alive. And just when you thought there wasn’t anything new that the Adventure Time universe could add to its already complicated cosmology, we introduce another significant figure to the multiverse, the Karma Worm, who eats balls of pain that are apparently something like energy left over from when someone chooses not to do something, and then are put back into the flow to make a new universe based on that decision (or lack thereof). That’s…certainly a novel concept, though the more significant revelation of this worm is that he is actually the brother of the Cosmic Owl, being the other being that was punished for taking that pizza eons ago. And apparently because he hadn’t been eating the pain balls made by the owl, he’s able to revive his brother from…that timeline? I don’t quite get it, but it at least manages to get Finn acquitted and give the Cosmic Owl another chance at a better life…which we can hopefully same the for Finn next week when his mom(‘s clone) gets involved to try and save him.
And speaking of Finn, or at least a Finn adjacent character, we also see the return of Fern, Finn’s grassy doppleganger that was made from the combination of his cursed Grass Sword and the sword that was made out of a different alternate Finn back in the middle seasons of Adventure Time. Yeah, this shit is still pretty complicated. Last time we saw Fern, he had gone evil and then snapped out of it just in time to die in the series finale of the old show, but for whatever reason, he’s now working with the Karma Worm and has been monitoring Finn’s pain balls as well, which give us some flashbacks to key moments of Finn’s adventures, as well as his turbulent relationship with Huntress and possibly the moment that Jake died, which we don’t get to see in full. But the purpose of seeing those is mainly for Fionna’s sake, as she gets to see some hardships some of her friends have gone through, some of which due to her, which hopefully gives her the push to try and fix things when she gets back. Huntress does battle with Witch Wizard, who has absorbed the Heart of the Forest, but bests her and completes her own character arc as well, though ends up without a way back to Ooo. And as for Cake, she gets smitten with the Karma Worm when he sees beauty in her oddities, so she decides to stay with him for awhile to figure herself out…which is gonna suck for M-Cron considering it seemed like he and Cake were figuring stuff out, but I guess not well enough. And with that, we’ve only got one more episode of the season, and there’s a LOT left to resolve, so fingers crossed they can!

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
