English Dub Review: Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! “Those Who Inherit The Galbraith Name”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

As their party is soon to reach Galbraith, Aristide decides to tell Melphie about his past and upbringing, which helps to bring the two closer together.

OUR TAKE

Well, I guess that flight home on dragon back is taking a long ass time, because there is apparently enough time left for a whole ass backstory! That is to say, I am glad we are learning more about Aristide’s upbringing and how he got into the position he is in today. A lot of what we have seen so far has been from Melphie’s perspective, learning about her status quo, and her mom’s tragic death, and what she wants to do. In fact, I’d honestly say we are probably overdue to learn more about Aristide, so it is good that we are getting it out of the way now, over half way through the season. And it turns out there is a lot to learn, as he apparently grew up in a place that was in the middle of not just a horrific famine and drought, but also social and political upheaval about the next person to take the throne. Airstide’s powerful magical abilities were apparent even at a young age, and so he almost became a political pawn for Galbraith to invade other countries to make up for their dwindling population after the famine. However, he had the wherewithal to go to his older brother Maxim, the true heir and ten years older, and the two worked to make Maxim the king after their father abdicated, while Aristide would be adopted by the knights, so the two could work together from different positions to help rebuild their country.

Aristide honed his abilities to hunt dangerous monsters and sell their remains to Maxim to make use of in gaining more money for the kingdom, and he had resigned himself to sacrifice his life to this task one day. However, Melphie has already lost one loved one to a herculean task where they sacrificed themselves, her mother specifically, so she is not going to let this happen to her fiance. It seems that if Melphie is able to pursue her main goal of perfecting the technique to remove the excess magic from creatures, she might be able to save Aristide’s life in the process by making his task moot, thereby killing two trauma birds with one therapy stone. We have five more episodes in this season, so maybe there’s enough time to accomplish that, though the episode ends with the party facing some deadly aerial beasts, so we’ll have to see how all of that resolves first.
