Review: Universal Basic Guys “I Am Jar”

Mark gets in a magician’s duel; Tammy tries to win a nursing award.

Our Take

I Am Jar refers to a trick that Mark learns to show up a local magician which is just the latest in a long line of the common “Mark vs” trope that Universal Basic Guys deploys on a weekly basis. All of them are largely the same, Mark’s bored and gets jealous by whomever and does everything he can to try and beat whomever the antagonist is. As for the magician being this week’s victim, Rick and Morty kind of has the cake on competitive lead characters and Rick has slayed numerous purveyors of magic which far more panache than what UBI is giving us, right now.

Another noted bit, there’s a scene where David visits the same hospital that Andrea ends up in due to her carpel tunnel syndrome, but the duo don’t even bother to interact at all which is odd for an animated married couple.

Overall, a very paint-by-numbers episode of Universal Basic Guys that has a few laughs inspired by The Prestige but Tammy’s nursing award and Mark trying to vie for dominance all seems a bit tired cliche at this point.
