English Dub Review: Kaiju No. 8 “Second Wave”

Overview:

The Defense Forces suffer severe damage from a fortitude 9.0 Kaiju that appears at the capital.

Our Take:

I haven’t spoken on the music in a show in a while, but I have to say that the music of Kaiju No. 8 is fantastic. Kafka’s theme song comes on at the perfect times, like when he rescued Shinonome. Speaking of Shinonome, I also want to talk about Emi Lo, who voices her. Emi Lo has exploded onto the anime dub scene in my opinion, and it began with their role as Maomao in The Apothecary Diaries, but since then, I’ve heard them in a lot of things. This was an episode they showed off and I can’t remember the character of Shinonome, but I won’t forget them anytime soon.

One more thing on the music, when some of the bigger kaiju started emerging from the ocean and underground,, I could have sworn that the song being played was one of the Godzilla theme songs. I don’t think that it would be for licensing reasons but I think it was an homage of sorts. I’m excited to see Kafka get a chance to shine in the next episode because I don’t feel like he’s gotten many opportunities.
