OUR TAKE

Witch Watch continues to hold strong in its third episode, with a fun variation on the Opening that shows it very much unfinished. This would be a BIT funnier if this was used last week before we saw the completed opening, and I probably would have believed they hadn’t finished it yet since I have seen some anime go into broadcast with unfinished Openings. Specifically Zom 100 that only put out its completed Opening a few episodes before the end of its currently only season. But even so, LOOKING unfinished is just as hard as looking finished sometimes, so to do that for a full nintey second gag is pretty impressive. If it wasn’t clear by now, this show is definitely diving head first into the comedy at any opportunity, including the meta kind. That could easily wear out its welcome pretty quickly, especially over the course of a half a year’s worth of episodes, but we’ll just have to wait and see how it’s faring by the time we get there. And I still haven’t even started talking about the actual episode yet, that’s just how notable this gag was! AND also how kind of rudimentary this episode also was, but we’ll get to that.

This episode once again had three segments that all could’ve been rolled into one story if they bothered too, but all work pretty much fine on their own. The first focuses on antics at home as Nico continues efforts to show her charms to Morihito only for him to barely notice them, while still genuinely caring for her, which is just gonna be their dynamic and hopefully I won’t get bored with that very quickly. The next segment’s main highlight is Nico trying to duplicate herself with magic in order to carry more boxes around for a task, but splitting herself in half only splits up her strength, height, AND brain power, which then leads to yet another split into four quarter brained idiots. However, as mentioned, Morihito gets warning from Nico’s mother Ibuki, who is working on learning prophecies, that some misfortune may befall them soon, noting that “Dogs and raindrops will bring disaster”. That comes to pass in the final segment for the episode, where the two are confronted by someone…who turns out to be Kanshi Kazamatsuri, Nico’s raven familiar. So, now we have a proper rival for Nico’s affections, but like any third wheel in these shows, he lost before the game started. But maybe he’ll add to the laughs, which we’ll see next week.

Error happened.
