English Dub Review: The Apothecary Diaries “Ice”

Overview:

Xiaolan accidentally ruins an expensive block of ice. Maomao comes up with a delicious backup plan.

Our Take:

Is there anything that Maomao doesn’t know? She used some of the chunks of ice to make ice cream. No one had ever had ice cream before because everyone was excited to try it and loved it once they did. I love seeing how smart Maomao is, but she might be as dense as any harem protagonist I’ve ever seen. How can she not see that Jinshi has feelings for her? I suppose we don’t know for certain, but it seems like a safe bet at the very least.

Lady Gyokuyou made a comment about the baby she’s pregnant with kicking downwards as opposed to upwards. With the baby being due soon, this made Maomao a little concerned. If the baby is kicking downwards, that means it will come out feet first and result in a breech birth. Gyokuyou would probably need a C-section in that case, and those are dangerous today, let alone back in ancient China. Maomao suggests letting her father be a consultant on the birth because he’s a respected doctor, but with him being exiled from the rear palace, it might be a hard sell for her.
