Looking Back: Adult Animation Canceled In 2024
Arcane

Bloomberg is noting that due to the price tag of $250 million that the production of Arcane was a miss. Mind you, when Marvel spends over $300 million on a The Marvels movie that only made $200 million you don’t hear anything about it. For Arcane, one could say the League of Legends brand as a whole is very profitable and everything else is just gravy. With more spin-offs on the way, it’s clear that Riot Games is just kicking off their cinematic universe whilst brands like Marvel are struggling to keep theirs afloat which brings us to…
Marvel What If…?
Kat Dennings fucks Howard the Duck and we get duck Jesus as a result. That about sums up how Marvel wrapped this series and now the same producers that gave us Marvel’s What If? season three are taking on the third season of X-Men ’97…oh boy.
Velma
Ya gotta hand it to Mindy Kaling. The multi-hyphenate producer made a ton of noise when the first season of Velma dropped on MAX but not enough for the show’s second season. Though it should be noted that WB Discovery’s history with moving forward with quality adult animation has been very much challenged these last couple of years but here’s hoping that changes in the incoming year.
Clone High
Whereas Velma made a bunch of noise to justify the show’s first season, Chris Lloyd and Phil Miller’s attempt at reviving a franchise that once did the same fell on deaf ears. This is what happens when you let TV show executives and therapists in on your writer’s room meetings.
Red vs. Blue
Not only did Red vs Blue die but the entirety of Rooster Teeth did. It’s not known what the future is for Red vs Blue which is a shame because 2025 looks to be a year where machinima goes mainstream. Perhaps Red vs Blue will get the treatment like The Flintstones did in that we know how important this franchise is even if there’s no hope of a quality reboot.
The Bad Batch
Star Wars: The Bad Batch probably won’t get the same respect that The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Star Wars: Resistance get now, but Dave Filoni can do a lot worse than nearly 50 episodes over three seasons. Now Dave gets to bring some of his animated ideas to live-action, could The Bad Batch return in another form altogether?
Scavengers Reign
Quite possibly the most heartbreaking on the list. We tried to get Netflix to save this one-time MAX exclusive but to no avail. Even with creator Joe Bennett’s highly-anticipated new series Common Side Effects coming to Adult Swim next year I can’t help but wonder the creative ceilings Scavengers Reign could have reached if just given a solid chance.
Star Trek: Lower Decks
It’s sounding more plausible that characters from this series could get some sort of live-action future in Star Trek-verse but 2025 is going to be a rebuild year for Paramount+. With ViacomCBS getting new owners and reports of the new incoming administration going the NBC route with it’s cable assets, Mike McMahan’s creative brilliance may be in flux this coming year, but hopefully not for long.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
