Review: Zombies: The Re-Animated Series “Screambrook”

Overview

Visiting an alternate universe where humans, zombies, and werewolves square off in a dance battle on the night of a Halloween dance battle in “Screambrook.” The episode features heart-pounding Halloween versions of “We Own the Night,” “Someday” and “Fired Up” from Disney Original Movie series “ZOMBIES.”

Our Take

Much like how Disney made an animated spin-off of the “Descendants” franchise, Disney dips its toes once more with another franchise Zombies but minus anything resembling horror or gore of course. This feels more like Shea Fontana’s rendition of Monster High from Nickelodeon in terms of art style and aesthetic, but with musical moments sprinkled into the proceedings.

While the show’s humor is a highlight, the fourth-wall-breaking moments dominate the second half of the episode, which feels like a missed opportunity. The episode’s short runtime makes this choice feel like filler. The pacing could have been tighter, especially when compared to other Disney spin-offs like Descendants: Wicked World, where even short episodes added more to the narrative.

Overall, the series has potential, but this particular episode focusing on Addison or Zed, felt less engaging and left more to be desired. Despite its fun musical moments, the show struggles at times to keep viewers hooked, leaving room for improvement in future episodes since this was recently announced that this will be it’s only season cutting down the episode count from 40 to 20, so let’s hope the writers have a plan to give this show a sense of finality…
